Winter Veggies

We just wanted to take a moment to update everyone on the comings and goings of the last few months and those to come.

Firstly many people have been asking about our winter veggie Fresh brussel sproutsboxes…in short we’re not going to start up boxes again until Spring at the earliest and this depends on many factors, the biggest of which is weather. For a number of reasons we haven’t got the quantity and diversity of crops in the ground to support winter veggie boxes but we still do have lots of winter veg that we are selling through the Castlemaine Weekly Farmers Market Weekly. Come see us there every Wednesday from 2.30-5.30pm (winter hours) on the Western Reserve Oval in Castlemaine.

Cohen and Mel harvesting spudsWe are currently seeking grants and creative funding opportunities to get our first internship program off the ground. We are hugely excited about this and our vision is that it will become a program we offer each year for aspiring growers to learn the ins and outs of being a market gardener. Ruby is our first intern who will be starting with us in August so that she gets the full picture of the seasons transition into spring and summer mad times! We hope to develop resources that we can then also share with other market gardeners who want to run similar internships. In other news this winter has been a little different to what we planned. The three major infrastructure projects that we had hoped to knock over have had to go on hold as we try and just keep things ticking on half steam. At the end of autumn  Sas injured her back and has been laid out flat for 7 weeks. this has meant that Mel has had to fly solo with all the physical work at the farm doing season change over and getting all the winter beds prepared and crops in the ground as well as planning all the spring rotations and numbers. A huge effort and Mel is now having some (semi) time off to gather her energy before the spring gets into full swing. Our Spring capacity is still a little unknown as backs can be slow things to heal, but with Ruby our intern on board, we hope to continue on as usual but with a whole lot more thought to how we manage the farm and ourselves with true sustainability at the heart.

Planning Times and Carpet of The Mind

Hi out there, thanks for being an audience to our thoughts.  I find it hard to make time to write the monthly blog, but whenever I do, I’m glad for the time to reflect.  As I’ve weeded, planted, picked and driven this week Ive wondered what to prattle on about; as there’s lots spinning around in my head.  So many upheavals and movements in the world.

In my immediate world health and wellness is a big one circling round at the moment; with Sas healing off site and me keeping things physically ticking along.  Sas has been cranking out numbers, taxes, education resources…so she’s still actively doing Gung Hoe and working; just at home and with the priority of healing, not working.

It is also planning time – generally I come up with the rotations of crops, metres of crops, and timing of crops in order to then punch the numbers of how many seedlings we need in the ground, of what and when.  All of this info goes to Sas and she starts to seed things up.  Planning happens in June/July and it sees us through (ideally) to the same time next year.  This process even though it excites me, always stresses me out!  Ive no doubt its because I don’t give it the the time it realistically takes me and im sure staring down the barrel of another season and its unknowns has its grips too.  But I don’t want to hand it over, cos when I get in the zone it fuels me!

I’m aware that this season will look different with Sas in rehab and us planting into peaches and cream and I think this year has already had so many reconfigurations it’s feeling hard to grapple with a few more.  Learning just how much ‘unknown’ I can cope with I reckon!  The reason I’ve been thinking bout all of this is because its really highlighted to me that mentally I’m in a way better place than the last few years – last year particularly, which gives me insight (a bit) into how quickly I can snap into overwhelm, anxiety and panic.  Words I never thought would represent some of Mel.  The tracks to feeling like im going to die have become well worn paths in the carpet hallway of the brains thoughts.  Before I know it im down the end of the hall. Dammit!  In recognising all of this I’m seeking some more professional help and learning, again, to listen to what I need to stay well.  Sometimes its even as if I’m learning it again. (Dammit!) So I’m learning to really own – well im trying to, what Mel actually needs.  The reason planning comes into this is because its one clear example that I don’t honour myself with the reality of HOW LONG it takes me!  I need time to reflect on things before I know what I think is another example.  No-one else can do these things but me!  It actually is empowering, if a bit weird at first.

I guess what Im getting at is that health – physical or mental, is vital.  And if we get better at listening and respecting our selves rather than being stoic or thinking that we’ve gotta do all the things all the time, our own selves will thank us. (And those around us too, no doubt!)  I think its one of the life long lessons for me in this life around the sun for sure…

In terms of Gung Hoe updates we are excited that Ruby will be joining us in August, and Amanda is helping me out majorly on Tuesdays with picking.  Cohen and Abigail are the dream team vollies who also wash dishes and make cake.  Deb the human weed machine comes and goes in the night.  The worms are VERY active and its exciting seeing them at home and doing their thing.  This has been the sunniest and wettest winter in a while and its great! The season is changing and I can see things growing…exciting and nerve racking!

Tessa’s cows are in the bottom of peaches and cream keeping down the cape weed (phew) and I’m taking a bit of a break in July – looking forward to bush walks, sleep ins, reading, deserted beach walks, listening to records, writing letters, stitchng my clothes back together again, films at home, typewriting up a zine storm, having an old  friend staying, getting photos together for a group photography exhibition in November and cooking!

All that said, I better get going and unpack from the weekly markets!

Seeking Funding- Internship Program

Growing the growers has always been a part of our long term vision. We alone can only feed such a small amount of people in our community and there is space for many more passionate souls doing what we do. Helping to train and inspire the next generation of thoughtful, small scale growers is a responsibility, a challenge and an honour that we completely accept and hold. We have been and continue to be blessed with mentorship, learning and guidance from many wonderful people on our journey and we hope to pass that on down the line.

There currently are very few internship or hands on learning opportunities for aspiring small scale market gardeners in Australia. Especially ones that actually provide the intern with any kind of income so they can survive whilst in training. This exactly the sort of program that we need to be encouraging to ensure the future sustainability of the small scale, diverse and ecologically wise food growing system.

Lets grow the growers!

…that wind that lets us live.

The morning wind spreads its fresh smell.
We must get up and take that in,

Frosty mornings, sparkling glittering landscapes that transform into blue sky and sun ray filled days are the flavour of winter thus far. Cool crisp nights and short days full of warm sun to thaw the delicates and encourage small amounts of growth. Occasional greys and rains and then back to the glorious sun…

Well you never do know what life s going to throw up and seems like this year
is the year for all sorts of surprises…on the one side challenging and on the flip side, lots of opportunity for growth, creativity and re-imagining. Things are moving slowly for us now. Not out of lack of endless ‘to do’ lists and exciting projects but because of what life has thrown us. May saw us celebrate the end of the intensity of the Summer/Autumn harvest, Mel and I both celebrated our May birthdays with a week off each. Since then, the reality of the long, hectic and physically intense season has taken its toll on us in different ways. For me (Sas), horizontal has become the perspective from which I’m viewing the world the past three weeks. I’m back to basics, learning how to breathe again and care for my most important tool, me. Injuring my back has been an unescapable reminder that what we strive to create and live outwardly we also have to nurture within ourselves.

Gung Hoe is able to keep functioning because we are a collaboration between friends, not just a ‘business partnership’. In the hard times we pull together to support each other in the ways we most need, with love, care and respect. If this was a solo operation, everything would have ground to a halt right now. But Mel is keeping the farm humming and finding her own rhythm that also gives her space to regenerate.

Its times like these when we also really feel the strength and generosity of the community of spectacular humans that have come together around us and what we do. Take for example Deb…she’s a total nut bag and we love her to the ends of the universe and back. Just about every morning for the past 4 months, she has been coming and weeding for us. She does an hour or two of power weeding, whatever the weather, sometimes in the dark with a head torch before dawn, and then she’s off. She is a continual source of both inspiration, encouragement and just bloody practical help. I think she gets volunteer of the millennia award!

We’ve got a few exciting projects on the brew over winter including construction of a modest 6 x 6.6m poly tunnel in Peaches and Cream. This will help us stagger our ripening successions of summer fruiting crops like tomatoes and capsicums and extend their harvesting period. It will also enable us to increase the winter production of some of the more cold sensitive crops.

Our amazing and enthusiastic worker Ruby who helped us pack veg boxes all Ruby with a cuppa and big smilesummer has accepted our offer to do a 4-6 month internship with us starting in August, now we just have figure out how to fund it. Growing the growers has been part of our vision right from the beginning of Gung Hoe, so finding a young woman like Ruby who is keen and who we already have a good working relationship with to  be our first intern is such a gift. We believe that the program/opportunity we’ll be offering Ruby is extremely ‘fundable’ as skilling up the next generation of food growers in this country is so important. We just have to find an organisation willing to fund it. So all you people out there in the know how with grants, please let us know if you see a grant that we could apply for!

Another extremely exciting project we’re working on in collaboration with Murnong Mamas is the transition of one of our growing plots from annual introduced vegetables to perennial native food plants. Access to enough bush tucker crops to feed the growing demand for their catering services and value added products is a challenge and so together with another wonderful and knowledgable young woman from Murnong Mamas, Clare, we will be designing, preparing and planting  out the bush tucker plot in Spring. Its a whole new world for us to grow bush tucker on this scale and we’re really excited and honoured to learn from and be guided by Aunty Julie McHale who has an amazing depth of knowledge and wisdom about growing and using bush tucker plants in this area (not to mention all the other things she has immense knowledge, skill and wisdom in!)

Finally, perhaps the most important project we’ll be working on over the coming months, is a re-thinking of how we do things at Gung Hoe. Its clear the way we have been working although great for the soil, the planet and the community, has not been so great for us. We are dreaming up creative ways to keep doing what we’re doing and what we love in our bones,  but in a way that helps us to grow stronger and healthier at the same time.

Turn of the Season

Good Morning!

Its still dark outside and I’m tucked up in bed with a cuppa by my side.  This week was the last summer box pickup and the last days for our paid weekly helpers; Ruby and Nikki.  It is like the stop gap for us in the season.  Similar to garlic – in April we and our helpers planted 6000 garlic bulbs that will be ready for sale at Christmas and is our 6th birthday! We are now entering into our 6th year – I think that felt pretty huge for the both of us!

The season has been been shifting for a few months now in the overnight temps, the soil temps and day length and it feels that now is our time to realign with the earth and change gears.  Summer has been a massive season for us, for everybody really.

We planted out more than we ever have before and were graced with a very productive season thanks to summer rain, decent temperatures and obvious increased soil health.  We watched the bush fires alongside everyone else, worked with the local growers, producers, chefs and a bunch of amazing volunteers to put together a feast to build awareness and resilience of our communitys food bowl and to meet our neighbours; and now the virus.  We are looking forward to the next few weeks that see us taking some time for a rest off farm.

Then we can come back to the patch, start winter boxes and start ticking (hopefully!) off our cool season to do list and get peaches and cream (our new acre) up and ready for the on coming spring / summer;  whilst also observing what the earth does at this time, which is slow down and grow in the dark.  Slowly.  It is time for deep rest and rebuilding, renourishing what summer takes out of you.

We are lucky to be surrounded and supported by people who believe in what we are doing and how we are doing it – when you are walking on the edge and creating all the time, this is really important; because more often than not the greater population don’t think what you do is important or useful or worthwhile.  I know for me (Mel) this is absolutely vital; cos you doubt yourself, you just do.

Our friend Allie has captured a lot of our Gung Hoe story via podcasts for different radio shows she has rolled out.  I listened to them last month and in the same way its important to have supporters on your side, it was awesome to listen back to our younger selves banging on about the same things we’re still banging on about.  How affirming!   You can listen to them here if you’re interested…

As I left the Castlemaine Farmers Market Weekly on Wednesday, I was taken aback at how bustling it was. (In a socially safe, distanced way of course, don’t worry!)  We are now situated on a large oval, and there are lots more stall holders who have been coming and also more of the community has been getting on board.  Something the virus has seemed to have done is shine a light on the people who work in small business, and the community wanting to support them.  It’s pretty incredible.  We have been overwhelmed with a big demand.  Part of me knows this is because people are wanting to support local business and eat good food, and I’m very grateful – the other part of me hopes that this desire lasts and that the support, awareness and enthusiasm of who is growing / producing food in our community out lasts “the virus”.

You see, we will only grow what we mostly know we can sell.  And now that we have peaches and cream we can produce more; pending seasons weather of course, and after this season of selling out most markets, we will.  So I hope that our community continues to seek out fresh, locally grown and made produce.  Because we have’t been busier due to the virus like lots of people have commented we must be.  Our sales avenues have changed – less restaurants – more boxes – and for the first month we were (along with everybody else) figuring out the safest, best way to look after ourselves and look after those who are buying and eating our food.  So systems were changing weekly along with stress levels and holding a calm, positive space; refusing to enter into panic and distress.  Tiring!!  But in regards to us being busier – I think it’s because more people have seen what we are doing, that’s all.  There’s been more attention paid to what we do.  Which I’m not complaining about! Its great that people are getting a handle on how hard we work to look after the earth (crops are always in rotation remember) to produce food.

Sas was planting the tomato, chilli, capsicum seeds into seed trays in her living room last year at the end of July.  The onions that people are eating now were planted in the soil last year from June to August.  The potatoes and pumpkins went in last Spring.  We can’t be busier because of “the virus” as we have to plan how many metres of plants we will plant out in Spring / Summer, so they can grow and then get eaten in summer/Autumn – way back in June the year before!  We can roughly plan for a certain amount of boxes and what will go to restaurants and markets and then we have to just go along with what the season provides weather wise, and so it goes.  Farming is a long distance game, we have to make plans that always change, but the foundation of how much you plant of what is decided 6 or more months before the season in which you eat it.


It has been good that the ‘essential’ nature of we do has been recognised but we also know that what everybody contributes to society is ‘essential’.  Indeed the patchwork of humanity is only as great as all the beautifully diverse squares.  So yes, please keep supporting your local growers and producers, but also support your neighbours  and all the others that make up our society, they are also essential.

My cup of tea is empty and I have to get dressed for Friday Fun Day (Im referring to our Field Couture series, its one of the things that’s kept us sane during these weird isolated times and helped us to laugh) so I will sign off here.  Thank you for supporting us at the farmers markets, through buying veg boxes and sourcing our produce for your restaurants / cafes / catering events.  We love growing real food for our community of eaters.  Every week the boxes look lush and green; have different veg in them to nourish you and I hope you can taste the love with which its grown.  We will still be at the weekly market selling veg and we are planning to grow more for market and so we can add a few more boxes to the total tally for next summer.  Sign up to the Gung Hoe’s email list here:   or to the Harcourt Organic Co-ops newsletter list here:  to be the first to find about winter boxes (green and lean they’re called “diehards”) and everything else going on!
